How Do I Trust God When Nothing Is Happening?

How do I trust God when nothing is happening?

This has been the question I have found asking myself during this season of my life. Because, there is a kind of faith that is easy to talk about when you can see God moving.

It is easy to say, “I trust God,” when the prayer has been answered, the door has opened, the breakthrough has come, and everything seems to be falling into place.

But what happens when you are praying and fasting, believing God, doing your best to remain faithful, and nothing seems to be happening?

I have found myself in that place.

I am in a season of praying, fasting, believing, waiting, and trusting God for things that are deeply important to me. There are blessings I am asking God for. There are prayers I am hoping He will answer. There are things I genuinely desire and believe God can do.

And if I am honest, sometimes I wish the process would move faster.

I wish I could see the evidence of what I have been praying for.

But somewhere along this journey, God has been teaching me something I did not initially understand:

Perhaps this season is not only about what God wants to give me. Perhaps it is also about who He is teaching me to become, and, more importantly, about knowing Him.

That doesn’t mean the blessings don’t matter.

They do.

Our desires matter to God. Our prayers matter. The things we are believing Him for matter.

But I am learning that God Himself has to become greater than the things I am asking Him for.

Because what happens if I receive everything I prayed for but never truly learn how to abide in Him?

What happens if I get the blessing but lose the relationship?

What happens if I receive the answer but never learn the One who answered?

“Apart From Me You Can Do Nothing”

One Scripture that has become especially meaningful to me in this season is John 15:5, where Jesus says:

“I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing.”

I have read this verse before, but sometimes a Scripture becomes different when you are actually living it.

Jesus doesn’t say, “Apart from Me you can do a little less.”

He says, “Apart from me you can do nothing.”

That means the goal isn’t simply to get God’s help so we can go and build the life we want.

The goal is to remain connected to Him.

A branch doesn’t struggle to produce fruit independently from the vine. It remains connected, and the life of the vine produces the fruit.

And perhaps that is what God is teaching us right now.

Abide before you achieve.

Know Him before you chase what He can give you.

Remain connected to Him before you become consumed with the outcome.

Because maybe the greatest miracle of this season isn’t only what God will eventually place in our hands.

Maybe it is what He is doing in our hearts while our hands are still empty.

The Pruning Hurts, But It Has a Purpose

Just a few verses earlier, Jesus says something else in John 15 that has been difficult but beautiful for me to understand:

“Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”, John 15:2

Pruning is not punishment.

Pruning is preparation for greater fruitfulness.

And pruning can be painful.

God has been showing me parts of myself I didn’t know were there.

Things I thought I had surrendered but hadn’t.

Fears I didn’t realize were controlling me.

Impatience.

The desire to have everything figured out.

The temptation to measure God’s faithfulness by how quickly He answers my prayers.

The need for certainty.

The tendency to want the blessing more than I want the Blesser.

This season has exposed things in me, not to shame me, but to transform me.

And that is one of the hardest things about spiritual growth.

Sometimes we pray, “God, change my circumstances,” and God begins by changing us.

He starts working on our hearts.

He teaches us surrender.

He teaches us patience.

He teaches us obedience when there is no immediate reward.

He teaches us how to trust Him when we cannot trace Him.

And sometimes, He removes things we thought we needed because He knows they were keeping us from becoming who He created us to be.

That pruning can hurt.

But it is also evidence that He is working.

I Am Learning That Waiting Is Not the Same as Doing Nothing

There have been moments when I have looked at my life and thought, “Nothing is happening.”

But when I look closer, I realize that something actually is happening.

I am changing.

My perspective is changing.

My priorities are changing.

My relationship with God is becoming deeper.

I am learning things about myself that I might never have discovered in a season where everything came easily.

I am learning what I really believe when I don’t have the evidence yet.

I am learning whether I can trust God because He is God, or only when He gives me what I want.

And that is a confronting question.

Because sometimes we don’t realize how much of our faith is attached to outcomes until God asks us to wait.

But Scripture reminds us:

“Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.”, Isaiah 40:31

Notice that it doesn’t say those who wait will lose.

It says they will renew their strength.

There is something God can build in you while you wait that you could not have received through instant gratification.

God Is Doing Something Beneath the Surface

I think about seeds.

When you plant a seed, there is a period where the ground looks exactly the same.

You water it.

You wait.

You look at the soil.

Nothing.

But beneath the surface, roots may already be growing.

And sometimes our lives look like that.

We look at our circumstances and see no movement.

No breakthrough.

No obvious change.

No answer.

But God may be doing something beneath the surface that we cannot yet see.

Galatians 6:9 says:

“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

In due season.

Not necessarily our preferred season.

Not our demanded season.

God’s timing.

And I am learning that faith means trusting God not only with what He gives me, but also with when He gives it.

I Still Want the Blessings

I want to be honest about something.

Learning to desire God above His blessings does not mean I have stopped wanting the blessings.

I still pray for them.

I still believe God for them.

I still have dreams.

I still have desires.

I still ask.

There is nothing wrong with wanting good things and bringing those desires before God.

The difference is that I am learning to say:

“God, I WANT this, but I NEED You more.”

That is a very different prayer.

It is the prayer of someone learning that God’s presence is not the consolation prize for not getting what they wanted.

His presence is the treasure.

The blessing is beautiful.

The answered prayer is beautiful.

The open door is beautiful.

But knowing the One who opens the door is greater.

This Season Is Teaching You Who You Are

One of the most unexpected gifts of this season has been discovering more about myself.

Waiting has a way of revealing you.

It reveals what you fear.

It reveals what you depend on.

It reveals where you seek validation.

It reveals how much control you want to have.

It reveals whether you can be content without having all the answers.

And although that process isn’t always comfortable, we should be grateful for it.

Because we don’t want to receive everything we are praying for while remaining the same person we were when we started praying.

we want the blessing to find us transformed.

We want to become someone who can steward what God gives us.

we want our character to grow alongside our prayers.

we want our relationship with God to be stronger than our relationship with the outcome.

And perhaps that is part of what God is doing right now.

He isn’t just preparing something for you.

He is preparing you for something.

“Be Still, and Know”

Psalm 46:10 says:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

I love that the verse doesn’t simply say, “Be still.”

It says, “Be still, and know.”

There is knowledge that comes through stillness.

There is intimacy that comes through waiting.

There are things about God you discover when you have no other option but to lean on Him.

When you don’t have the answer, you learn His peace.

When you don’t know the next step, you learn His guidance.

When you don’t see the provision, you learn His faithfulness.

When you cannot control the outcome, you learn surrender.

And when you realize you cannot do it in your own strength, you begin to understand what Jesus meant when He said:

“Apart from me you can do nothing.”

The Process Is Hard, But It Is Worth It

I know this season is hard.

I know what it feels like to pray the same prayer again.

To fast and still not see the answer.

To believe and still have questions.

To encourage other people while quietly wondering when your own breakthrough will come.

To wake up and wonder, “How much longer?”

If that is where you are, I want you to know something:

Your struggle does not mean your faith is failing.

You can be tired and still trust God.

You can cry and still believe.

You can have questions and still have faith.

You can admit that waiting is hard without admitting that God is unfaithful.

And maybe you don’t need to have everything figured out.

Maybe today you simply need to say:

“God, I am still here. I am still praying. I am still believing. Teach me what You want me to learn in this season.”

Because I am learning that the process itself can be sacred.

The waiting can transform you.

The fasting can deepen you.

The silence can draw you closer.

The pruning can make you fruitful.

The surrender can make you free.

And the uncertainty can teach you to trust the One who knows exactly where He is taking you.

Maybe Nothing Is Happening; Or Maybe Everything Is

I started this season thinking mostly about what I was waiting for.

But now I am beginning to see what God may be doing in me while I wait.

He is teaching me to know Him.

He is teaching me to depend on Him.

He is showing me parts of myself that need to change.

He is teaching me that I am not in control, and that I don’t have to be.

He is teaching me that my identity cannot be built around whether or not a particular prayer has been answered.

He is teaching me that I can trust Him even when I don’t understand .

And perhaps that is a blessing in itself.

So, if you are in a season where it feels like nothing is happening, don’t be so quick to dismiss the season.

Look again.

Maybe your circumstances haven’t changed, but you have.

Maybe the door hasn’t opened, but your faith has deepened.

Maybe the prayer hasn’t been answered, but your relationship with God has become more intimate.

Maybe you haven’t received what you are asking for yet, but God is preparing you to carry it when it comes.

And maybe, just maybe, the greatest thing happening right now is happening where no one else can see it:

God is transforming you from the inside out.

Keep praying.

Keep fasting.

Keep believing.

Keep abiding.

Keep trusting.

And keep your heart open to what God is doing, not only around you, but within you.

Because the goal was never simply to get to the blessing.

The goal is to become so deeply rooted in the Vine that whether the blessing comes today, tomorrow, or much later, you know the One you are walking with.

And that is something worth waiting for.

“Apart from me you can do nothing.”, John 15:5

So, I am learning to stop asking only, “God, when will You do something?”

And to start asking:

“God, what are You doing in me?”

Because perhaps this season isn’t empty after all.

Perhaps it is full of roots.

Full of growth.

Full of pruning.

Full of becoming.

Full of God.
