The Feminist movement vs. Biblical Womanhood
We’ve all heard phrases like, “What men can do, women can do in high heels.” At first glance, such statements can feel empowering. But over time, I began to question how modern feminism aligns, or clashes with my Christian faith, which sent me on a research on the feminist movement.
While feminism aims to promote equality for women in society, many Christians feel the movement contradicts core biblical principles, particularly around the roles of men and women. This post is not meant to attack feminism, but rather to present a viewpoint based on biblical teachings and personal reflection.
Does Feminism Undermine Biblical Submission?
One of the most debated topics in Christianity today is submission in marriage. Critics of biblical submission often cite Ephesians 5:22:
“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:22, NIV)
At face value, this verse may seem demeaning. But context matters. Just one verse earlier, Paul writes:
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21, NIV)
This shows that submission is mutual, not oppressive. Husbands are called to love their wives “just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25). True biblical leadership involves sacrificial love, not dominance.
Submission Requires Discernment
Christian women should not submit to just any man. A man who is not submitted to God cannot lead a home in a Godly way. In Genesis 2:15, God places Adam in Eden to “work it and take care of it.” Before Eve was even created, Adam was assigned a purpose.
A woman should seek a partner who:
- Walks closely with God
- Has a clear, Godly vision
- Is capable of loving and leading as Christ does
Biblical submission is not blind obedience. It is a partnership rooted in faith and mutual respect.
The Feminist movement Challenges Traditional Gender Roles
One of the core clashes between feminism and Christianity is the rejection of traditional gender roles. Feminism promotes full autonomy and often challenges the idea that a man is the head of the household. But Scripture states:
“The head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” (1 Corinthians 11:3, NIV)
This divine order isn’t about superiority, but about structure and purpose. Titus 2:3–5 instructs older women to mentor younger women, encouraging them to love their families and embrace homemaking, not as a limitation, but as a calling.
“Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children…to be busy at home…so that no one will malign the word of God.” (Titus 2:4–5, NIV)
This doesn’t mean women can’t work outside the home (Proverbs 31 makes that clear), but it emphasizes the value of creating a peaceful, loving household.

Provision, Respect, and Love: Responsibilities of a Godly Man
Feminism emphasizes independence, often pushing women to take on roles traditionally held by men. But the Bible clearly places provision and leadership on the shoulders of husbands:
“Anyone who does not provide for their relatives…has denied the faith.” (1 Timothy 5:8, NIV)
“Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.” (Colossians 3:19, NIV)
Submission becomes difficult when men abuse their role. A Godly husband is gentle, respectful, and deeply aware that how he treats his wife impacts his relationship with God:
“…treat them with respect…so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” (1 Peter 3:7, NIV)

The Feminist Movement and Reproductive Ethics
Another area of tension is the feminist stance on reproductive rights, including abortion and contraception. These issues challenge many biblical teachings on the sanctity of life. Christian women often find themselves conflicted, torn between modern freedoms and scriptural convictions.
Can Faith and Feminism Coexist?
Despite these tensions, some Christian women are working to redefine feminism through a biblical lens. They believe Jesus Himself uplifted women and defied cultural norms. Yet, true reconciliation between feminism and biblical doctrine requires deep theological reflection and spiritual maturity.
Navigating Between Two Worlds
The impact of feminism on Christian women is complex. While the movement has advanced the rights of women in many areas, its divergence from biblical principles has created confusion for some within the faith.
Ultimately, Christian women must seek God’s Word first, letting it guide their beliefs and relationships. Biblical submission, when rightly understood, is not weakness, it is strength under authority.
